Kamran is right except that I don't think Azhar Ali can succeed in ODIs. Batting has been letting us down, but it appears that PCB and team management have no clue what to do. There's need to create mental strength and desire to do well. Unfortunately, our players lose focus once they are in international arena. They're lost to glamour, money, & media blitz. They stop hard work which is so essential for top level sportspersons. Coaches have failed to instil all this. No doubt cricket is a team game, but individual effort is very much required.I think, the biggest problem lies in the selection process, where in Pakistan, some players are selected on the basis of their "Connections" and not the "Abilities". Either we should play K.Akmal as an opener or should completely drop him. He is wasted at #6 or 7. Shoaib Malik and Farhat should be out of the team. Azhar Ali. @Zia Hassan Are you seriously blaming the bowlers for the losses? Tell us, precisely which game they were given even a modest total to defend? They nearly managed to defend 170 against the West Indies, who were sweating right till the very end of their innings. They defeated a powerful batting side in South Africa in the warm-up, and kept them to a below-par total in the group game. It beggars belief that you seem to think our bowlers let us down in this tournament, Wahab, Junaid, Irfan, Ajmal and Hafeez bowled their hearts out, they deserve nothing but praise for their efforts with the ball. Only Nasir and Misbah didn't embarass themselves with the bat, everyone else has plenty to answer for Kamran's point about Hafeez cannot be said adamantly enough - it's time for the "Prof" to add some humility to his much-vaunted acumen and admit that the best thing he can for the team is to drop down the order and fulfil Shoaib Malik's place in the team. I think most Pakistan fans would agree that we do not mind one bit when our team loses, as long as we feel like they played with spirit and fight. It's the abject folding that hurts the most, and we've seen far too much of it in this tournament and from this team. Our bowlers are far too good to be pitied so much, it's high time they got some support in the form of runs on the board, otherwise there's little good argument for not picking a side with 11 bowlers if they're the ones expected to win us every match we play. Mr. Abbasi, Before any other issue, the question arises that what has PCB done to arrange A-team tours to Australia, England and South Africa. How can you expect the new talent to experience playing on foriegn wickets? Umar Akmal is one of the most talented batsmen. At one stage , when he started agaist New Zealand , looking at the way he played , strokes, one thought he could be the next big thing in world cricket. It may sound an exaggeration but I did think that he had the compactness and stroke production capabilities of a yound Sachin Tendulkar Somewhere down the line , he lost his appetite got involved along with his brother in controversies. Shoaib Mallik though I feel has something in him to do okay but Kamran Akmal ,Pakistan Board is playing a joke on the cricket lovers of Pak In ODI trying Azhal Ali may also be good. He is a good bat in the conventional mode but has the talent to succeed in ODI also I think people like imran farhat, kamran akmal, shoaib malik actually dont realise how much they hurt fans of pakistan cricket. On top of that the pcb is so incompetent it is unbelieveable. Make matters worse us fans continue to get heartbroken but no-one actually listens to us. As fans all we want to see is a team that is consistantley giving 100% when they enter the field because we know winning or losing is part of the game but to go down without giving 100% is heartbreaking. Pakistan lost all matches due to poor batting order and negative and defensive mind set of captian. . We have brilliant youngster still there. . We shall call Shahiad Afridi, umar akmal, Abdul Razzaq , Haris Sohail, Azhar mehmood and leave out farhat, kamran, Sohaib. My crickteam is 1. Ahmed Shahzad/ nasir jamshad 2. Muhammad Hafeez 3. Saeed ajmal/ raza hassan . . . Team may b changed as pitch changing raza with wahab in slow pitch. . Now we have 7 bowler. . Dare to dismiss him as a fluke, a man who sometimes gets lucky playing his game of craps, and he returns with a champion's response. Afridi has too many records and Man-of-the-Match medals to his name. He scored the fastest hundred in one-day internationals, and helped his country win a T20 World Cup. Afridi is no fluke. He is flawed and infuriating but there is magic in those Pathan eyes and wrists. Seventy six off 55 balls and bowling figures of 7 for 12 are stuff of school or park cricket, when a decent player crashes the party. You might dream of such a performance in an international but you would laugh at yourself for imagining it. That is the thrill of Afridi. The highs are living a daydream. West Indies aren't the strongest team in the world, but they seem ever on the cusp of a resurgence. At Providence Stadium they had Pakistan in ruin on a pitch that Misbah-ul-Haq described as almost impossible to bat on. Misbah, a man of his words, blocked to 52 runs in 121 balls. West Indies, thrashers all, struggled to 98 in 257 balls. Any method was destined to fail except, and not surely by providence alone, Afridi's. Afridi, dropped from the Champions Trophy, has been bristling to prove the world wrong. Statements, tweets, and any manner of posturing after the South Africa tour have sent a strong message that he wants to go out with a boom by playing the next World Cup. In fairness, his batting was a treat in that South Africa series too. But he was judged on his bowling, which was harsh, as the series wasn't one for spinners. When international wonders like Imran Farhat and Shoaib Malik made the Champions Trophy squad, and Pakistan travelled without an allrounder, it was hard to understand the logic of Afridi's exclusion. Why was Afridi less deserving of one more throw of the dice? One explanation is that with Afridi there is no certainty about what comes next. The only certainty is that when he performs, it is usually a match-winning exhibition. On this occasion, his determination to return to the team and contribute has been impressive. How long will it last? Nobody knows, not even him. But when Shahid Afridi is on song the magic word on everybody's lips is owowwahwowwahwow! Couldn't have performed any better to prove selectors wrong. What i think is, its better that they re-selected him on time, which has lifted up the moral of Pakistani Cricket and its fans... This also proves the fact that, WHERE THERE IS A WILL, THERE IS A WAY.. We all know that he wanted to stay out there while he was batting and wanted to make a difference.. He survived.!!! Honestly, i have been watching cricket for the past 20 years, i have never seen Pakistani Fielding on its peak before yesterday. Hence, the difference was made.. Bottomline : Respect Shahid Afridi...!!! in every sports there were a few people who actually change that sports frm basic to advance and they were called inventor afridi is one of them. actually he change the game of cricket frm tuk tuk to entertainment sports. well done lala and well come to the team. @alarky: Let us not compare Afridi and Sachin. Sachin is a world class Cricket batman who has many great fans like Ponting, Don Bradman and Lara. Abbasi sir, we all know Afridi, he is only a utility player, most of the times he should be considered only a bowler who can bat a bit and should be a # 6 or 7 batsman and if situation demands some times should be promoted up in the order. That is all. But Pakistan cricket treated him like an opening batsman and expected lot from him in batting department. Afridi himself many times stated that. He truly knows his abilities and a good honest man. Expectation ruined his career and of course the internal politics that always Pakistan teams carried with them. Imran must have been the best captain Pak ever produced but this guy was also a better leader. But always he had have to carry a fractured team under him and could not deliver the results expected. Remember how he conducted a mediocre Pak team in last world cup. My honest statement is even Imran cannot help current crop of players coz they lack both technique and will to excel at this highest level. As I have said before, Afridi's story in world cricket is very similar to Sachin Tendulkar's. They both started very early and became too loved by their bosses and fans, hence, they were allowed to get away with much more than their colleagues. And these extraordinary opportunities allowed them to look better than they really are. Their stature as practitioners of the sport is good, but their fans love them so much that they overrate them. The main difference between both is that when Afridi comes off, sure bet it is for Pkistan's cause. But when SRT comes off, as his records show, it is mainly for himself - some people feel it is due to delliberate selfishness. Though they sometimes provide plausible evidence, I am prepared to give SRT the benefit of the doubt. Afridi had lost his tuning as bowler for sometime. Dropping him helped him regain it. For batting he should practice in what he is good at.... 'hitting' and reduce his error percentage. Eschewing strokes will not work for him.... Since the day Afridi Clobbered the Sri Lankans to fastest century in xxxx...there was never a doubt about his Monstrous talent....but his temperament & ability to build inning was always questionable....biting the ball...striking a spectator...temporary retirements... blatantly scuffing up the pitch.....fighting with team-mates...& inconsistency have made his performances a fluke...with little bit more patience he could have been in the league of Sehwag, Gayle, Gilchrist, Hayden......a pure Pashtun.. For anybody thinking the only way is up for Pakistan in this Test series, think again. Misbah-ul Haq's team was competitive in two innings in Johannesburg, which leaves plenty of room for improvement and an equal amount for deterioration. South Africa dominated after the first hit, with their big players ensuring a happy centenary for Graeme Smith. Pakistan cannot match South Africa for big players but they do have the biggest bird. Mohammad Irfan, acolyte of the original Big Bird, Joel Garner, was a surprise omission from the first Test. The wrong must be righted. The scene is set in Cape Town. Big Bird II, the Gaggu Mandi version, must take wing. Fast bowlers have never come taller than Irfan. Humans over 7ft tall are rare, cricketers at that height are rarer still. When he first appeared on the international scene in xxxx, Irfan looked unfit and lacked control of line and length, pretty much struggling with all the attributes required to succeed at international level. On the recent tour of India, however, Irfan was a different prospect, offering control and sustained speed, a remarkable transformation and feather in the cap of the people who have guided him in the interim. Let's be in no doubt, South Africa were wary of Irfan. The batsmen made plans, as top teams will for a perceived threat. They raised the sightscreens to nullify his high delivery point. But Irfan wasn't risked. The bird was left in its cage. Instead, another fledgling, Rahat Ali, filled a space on the team sheet, nothing more. South Africa, with their battle hardened batsmen, will lose no sleep over him. They will be cautious, at best, against Umar Gul; while Junaid Khan is a serious threat, not a mortal danger. Irfan, meanwhile, is something different; unknown and unknowable, a physical extreme that can redefine the realms of possibility. No sane batsman would choose to face a 90mph bowler of his height on South African wickets--add Australian wickets to that, and some too in England, New Zealand, and the West Indies. A man who can make India's best batsmen hop on home turf deserves his chance in the land of the springbok. On song, Irfan can unsettle South Africa's batsmen--and that is what is required and that is why Irfan is a risk worth taking. Irfan's inclusion may be the only change to Pakistan's team. A collective failure from the batsmen should not lead to any change, especially now that Nasir Jamshed and Mohammad Hafeez look to have recovered from injury and ailment. Misbah has rejected a three-opener solution, although Imran Farhat's Midas luck can never be underestimated. Pakistan's only chance is to find a way of hitting back at South Africa, conservative tactics will not work. With the personnel at Misbah's command, the batting effort will only ever be steady. It is in wicket taking bowlers that Pakistan have hope of ruffling South African feathers. Saeed Ajmal, Junaid, and Irfan are a combination that South Africa, nay any batting order, will be concerned about, whatever the misadventures of Pakistan's batsmen. when i found out he wasn't picked for the first test i thought wasim,waqar and akhtar came out of retirement!!!because that is the only reason why tall man couldn't find a spot in the side!!!if he is not picked for south african fast and bouncy pitches then he will never find the side. just one piece of advice to tall boy. bowl throat balls and slip in the surprise yorker. that was all garner did.good luck. If we don?t have good quality fast bowlers (which is the case), then why we are not playing with the spinners (in which we are the bes). Questions: 1) Why Hafeez was not utilized right from the beginning of SA chase? I was hoping (and praying) to see Hafeez with a new ball with attacking field and brining Ajmal quickly with the same approach quickly -- this (use of spin) would have been the approach. Blame goes to Misbah, Whatmore and M Akram. 2) Poor fielding - same old story. Blame goes to fielding coach. 3) Sarfaraz?s performance -- drop catch, giving byes, no runs with the bat at all - the way he got out in 2nd inning is terrible. Pakistan,s real problem is that it has no batsman who can be depended upon to score at a minimum consistent level . Specially its senior batsmen such as Misbah and specially Younis Khan perform only in one inning in six . In the second Test if Pakistan had scored 75 more runs our Bowlers would have won the match for Pakistan I think pakistan is going to waste(KILL) Abdur Rehman as they did when Saqlain and Mushtaq were playing together. they should stick to their potential i.e. Spin attack beside playing with 3 pacers ..........see what the result is........owing to same situation arisen in past Pak had lost two big name viz. Mushtaq Ahmad, and Azhar Mahmood. Pak selector make hurry in picking Akmal bros. coz perhaps anyone see any potential in batting from Sarfaraz Ahmad . Younis Khan finally performed after his very long bad patch in the last two years during which he has been performing in one inning in about six . His century in the second Test was welcome . Nevertheless he undid the good work dropping a very easy catch when the South African total was only two . What a shame . I am a big fan of Misbah and agree by and large the team selection has been good. But for the life of me I cannot understand the omission of Irfan in the first test - even Boycott said he would have posed serious problems at xxxx feet elevation and bouncy pitch. Now I am clueless why Tanvir was chosen for the 2nd test leaving our Rehman who bowled so well in the practice match. A motorised parade of great heroes of India's past, including Wasim Akram, failed to inspire heroes of India's present and future to overcome Pakistan's competitive, albeit faltering, total of 250 runs. As much as Pakistan backed themselves in the one-day series, the ease of victory, culminating in MS Dhoni's futile rehearsal of a Test innings, was a surprise. The new regulations have wrenched one-day cricket from the grip of batsmen, and Pakistan's bowlers seized the moment in Calcutta. Junaid Khan and Mohammad Irfan sparkled in Pakistan's opening overs in a manner unseen since the dread days of xxxx. Junaid did little more in this series than perform to the standard expected; a routine top-class performance that leaves you baffled how easily he has been overlooked by Pakistan's selectors. Irfan, by contrast, was a revelation compared with his uncertain debut. He remains ungainly, the roughest of diamonds, but added pace and control produced frightening bounce even on these Indian wickets. India's strength is in batting, their players some of the best in the world and rajas in home conditions, but even such genuine talents struggled to find a composed response to Irfan's mighty deliveries. His figures were nothing extraordinary but the psychology of putting India's batsmen on the back foot was worth every wide, full toss, and four overthrows. Meanwhile, Nasir Jamshed was faced with the tamer challenge of India's opening bowlers, establishing himself as the rarest of commodities, a Pakistani batsman with a temperament to match his skill. But the difference in this series is in the bowling, aided by ICC's new rules. Fewer boundary riders allow better bowlers to prosper. Two bouncers per over restore the value of high-quality fast bowling. In combination, these changes reward superior bowling attacks and will lead to a readjustment in achievable one-day totals. The gulf between Pakistan's and India's bowling is no secret but it was horribly exposed here. India face a worrying challenge to assemble a threatening pace attack, a prerequisite for future success in one-day cricket. These rule changes help the game, not just Pakistan. Cricket has to be an even contest between bat and ball. The supremacy of batsmen has been dull and tedious, even mediocre international cricketers have plundered great bowlers. It is rare that the ICC earns credit but it should for these tweaks to the one-day format. One day cricket might just have been rescued. Dav Whatmore and his backroom staff are helping with an even more hazardous mission - the preservation and revival of Pakistan cricket. Success is important to win people over to your ideas and buy time, especially when that success is supported by improved performance. Pakistan's fielding on this tour has begun, perhaps for the first time, to resemble international class. Fielding is the finest indicator of the commitment of players and coaching staff to preparing for a contest. Maturity and good sense in executing cricket's other disciplines have been evident too. Professionalism is traditionally in short supply in Pakistan cricket but Dav Whatmore, in consort with Misbah-ul-Haq and Mohammad Hafeez, has begun to show how a touch of discipline might transform results. In the end though it is the players who are the harbingers of hope. Junaid Khan, Mohammad Irfan, and Nasir Jamshed have added fresh fascination to Pakistan's cricket story. And for the bowlers, at least, the new one-day game is made for them and Pakistan.
