The "reclining" Buddha is usually called the Parinirvana Buddha. This statue represents Buddha at the moment of death, when he enters "parinirvana" - the final state of nirvana, or enlightenment.
In traditional Buddhism, someone who attains parinirvana will not enter the cycle of rebirth again - they are completely freed from the bounds of karma and suffering.
This clay reclining Buddha came from inner Mongolia and it is about 45 years old.
